Vinyl Fluorosilicone Oil: Reactive Polymer for Oil-Resistant Addition-Cure Fluorosilicone Rubber

Hits: 178 img

What Is Vinyl Fluorosilicone Oil?

Vinyl fluorosilicone oil is a vinyl-functional fluorosilicone polymer, usually appearing as a colorless or light yellow transparent liquid. Its backbone consists of siloxane bonds, with trifluoropropyl groups on the side chains and vinyl groups at terminal or side-chain positions. The trifluoropropyl groups provide oil resistance, solvent resistance, low surface tension and a low refractive index, while the vinyl groups enable addition curing. Under platinum catalysis, vinyl groups react with hydrogen-containing fluorosilicone oil to form a three-dimensional crosslinked network. Therefore, vinyl fluorosilicone oil is commonly used as an active base polymer or reactive diluent in addition-cure fluorosilicone rubber, liquid fluorosilicone rubber, fluorosilicone potting compounds, fluorosilicone coatings and oil-resistant sealing materials. Compared with ordinary vinyl silicone oil, vinyl fluorosilicone oil shows better volume swelling resistance in fuels, lubricants and non-polar solvents. Compared with methyl fluorosilicone oil, it offers reactive vinyl groups for addition curing, making it more suitable for building crosslinkable fluorosilicone elastomer systems.

Key Technical Indicators

Vinyl Content Vinyl content determines addition reactivity, crosslink density and the mechanical properties of cured products. Higher vinyl content provides more crosslinking points, suitable for fluorosilicone rubber with higher hardness and tear resistance; lower vinyl content gives milder reactivity, useful for viscosity adjustment, process improvement or reduced crosslink density. Viscosity Range Vinyl fluorosilicone oil is available across a broad viscosity range, from tens to tens of thousands of centistokes or higher. Medium-to-high viscosity grades are suitable as base polymers for liquid fluorosilicone rubber used in injection molding, compression molding and extrusion; low-viscosity grades are more suitable as platinum active diluents, potting compound bases or coating modifiers. Fluorine Content and Trifluoropropyl Ratio Fluorine content affects oil resistance, solvent resistance, surface tension and compatibility with fluorinated systems. A higher trifluoropropyl ratio generally improves resistance to fuels, lubricants and non-polar solvents, while also lowering surface energy to support release, wetting and antifouling performance. Volatiles and Thermal Stability Low volatiles help reduce bubbles, pinholes and weight loss during curing. Vinyl fluorosilicone oil typically maintains stability across a wide temperature range, with some systems suitable for long-term use around -50°C to 250°C, though actual service temperature should be verified based on formulation, curing system and application conditions. Molecular Structure Type Vinyl groups may be located at chain ends or on side chains. Terminal vinyl structures offer better flowability and are suitable as liquid fluorosilicone rubber backbones; branched vinyl structures provide more crosslinking points and can be used to increase crosslink density, adjust hardness or act as hardening modifiers. Compatibility and Catalytic Adaptability Vinyl fluorosilicone oil must be compatible with hydrogen-containing fluorosilicone oil, platinum catalysts, inhibitors, fillers and solvent systems. Sulfur-, phosphorus-, nitrogen-, tin-, lead- or heavy-metal-containing impurities may reduce platinum catalytic activity, leading to incomplete curing, tacky surfaces or performance variation.

Main Performance Features

  • Addition-curable: vinyl groups react with Si-H bonds under platinum catalysis to build fluorosilicone elastomer networks.
  • Oil and solvent resistant: trifluoropropyl groups improve resistance to fuels, lubricants and non-polar solvents.
  • Low surface tension: fluoro-containing side chains provide low surface energy, suitable for coatings, release and surface treatment.
  • Wide-temperature stability: combines siloxane flexibility with fluorinated segment heat and weather resistance.
  • Adjustable viscosity: low-viscosity grades work as active diluents; medium-to-high viscosity grades serve as liquid fluorosilicone rubber bases.
  • Good electrical insulation: applicable to electronic potting, sensor encapsulation and insulation protection.
  • Customizable formulation: vinyl content, fluorine content, viscosity and molecular structure can be adjusted for different applications.

Typical Application Scenarios

Addition-Cure Liquid Fluorosilicone Rubber Medium-to-high viscosity vinyl fluorosilicone oil can serve as the main active base for liquid fluorosilicone rubber, combined with hydrogen-containing fluorosilicone oil, platinum catalyst and fillers to produce injection-molded or compression-molded fluorosilicone parts. Injection-Molded Fluorosilicone Seals Used for oil-resistant O-rings, oil seals, gaskets and hoses in automotive, aerospace and industrial equipment, where oil resistance, heat resistance and elastic recovery are required. Fluorosilicone Potting Compounds Low-viscosity vinyl fluorosilicone oil can be used in fluorosilicone potting systems, providing insulation, weather resistance and media resistance for sensors, electronic components and oil-resistant sealing structures. Platinum Active Diluent In addition-cure fluorosilicone rubber systems, vinyl fluorosilicone oil adjusts pre-cure viscosity, improving flowability, wetting and processability while maintaining vinyl reactivity. Fluorosilicone Coatings and Release Modification Applicable to oil-resistant coatings, antifouling coatings, release agents and surface treatment additives, leveraging low surface tension to improve coating spreadability, release behavior and media resistance. Oil-Resistant Sealing Material Development Suitable for formulation development in fuel systems, lubrication systems, hydraulic systems and non-polar solvent environments, supporting evaluation of volume swelling, elastic retention and long-term media resistance.

Selection and Usage Recommendations

  • Choose viscosity by application: medium-to-high viscosity for liquid fluorosilicone rubber bases; low viscosity for active diluents, potting compounds and coatings.
  • Match vinyl content with crosslinker: vinyl content should be balanced with Si-H content in hydrogen-containing fluorosilicone oil to avoid under-curing or over-crosslinking.
  • Consider fluorine content for oil resistance: for fuel, lubricant or non-polar solvent exposure, evaluate fluorine content, volume swelling and long-term immersion stability.
  • Distinguish terminal vs. branched vinyl: terminal vinyl offers better flow; branched vinyl provides more crosslinking points. Select based on hardness, elasticity and processing needs.
  • Control platinum catalytic environment: avoid sulfur-, phosphorus-, nitrogen-, tin-, lead- and heavy-metal-containing impurities to prevent catalyst poisoning.
  • Key points for overseas customers: emphasize vinyl content, viscosity grade, fluorine content, molecular structure type, compatibility with hydrogen-containing fluorosilicone oil and platinum catalysts, oil/solvent resistance, low surface tension and customization options to support liquid fluorosilicone rubber formulation, injection molding trials, potting evaluation and oil-resistant sealing material substitution.
