What Is Hydrosilyl Fluorosilicone Oil?
Hydrosilyl fluorosilicone oil is a class of fluorosiloxane liquids containing active hydrosilyl groups in the polymer chain or at the chain ends. It usually appears as a colorless or light yellow transparent liquid, with typical fluorosilicone properties such as oil resistance, solvent resistance, water/oil repellency and low surface tension.Unlike ordinary fluorosilicone oils, its Si-H groups can participate in addition reactions, crosslinking reactions or surface film-forming reactions under platinum catalysts or metal-salt catalysts.
In fluorosilicone formulations, hydrosilyl fluorosilicone oil is often used as a crosslinker or reactive additive. It can react with vinyl-functional fluorosilicone polymers, vinyl fluorosilicone oils or addition-cure fluorosilicone systems to form a more complete crosslinked network, thereby improving curing depth, surface properties, media resistance and coating adhesion. Some grades can also form films through low-temperature crosslinking, providing water and oil protection for fabrics, leather, rubber, metals, ceramics, glass, paper, cement, stone and other substrates.
Hydrosilyl fluorosilicone oil is not a general-purpose lubricating fluorosilicone oil. Its core value lies in the combination of reactive Si-H groups and a fluorosilicone oil-resistant structure, enabling both formulation reactivity and environmental durability.
Key Technical Indicators
Hydrosilyl Content
Hydrosilyl content determines the crosslinking activity and reaction equivalence of the oil. Higher active hydrogen content usually provides stronger crosslinking ability but may shorten pot life; lower content is more suitable as a surface-modifying additive or auxiliary crosslinker. Selection should be matched to the vinyl content, curing speed and target performance of the formulation.
Viscosity Range
Hydrosilyl fluorosilicone oil is available in low to medium viscosity ranges, allowing easy incorporation into fluorosilicone rubber, potting compounds, coatings and release agents. Lower-viscosity grades improve penetration and mixing, while higher-viscosity grades help control migration speed and film thickness.
Oil and Solvent Resistance
Due to fluorinated groups such as trifluoropropyl, hydrosilyl fluorosilicone oil shows good resistance to fuels, lubricating oils, hydraulic oils and certain organic solvents. When used in potting compounds, sealant coatings or waterproof films, it can maintain stability in oily or solvent-exposed environments.
Low Surface Tension and Water/Oil Repellency
Hydrosilyl fluorosilicone oil has low surface tension and can spread well on substrate surfaces to form a dense protective film. This makes it suitable for waterproofing agents, release agents, anti-stick coatings and surface treatments requiring reduced adhesion.
Curing and Film-Forming Methods
It can participate in curing through platinum-catalyzed addition systems, or form films via low-temperature crosslinking under metal-salt catalysts. The former is more suitable for addition-cure fluorosilicone rubber and potting compounds; the latter is more suitable for surface waterproofing of fabrics, leather, paper, stone and other materials.
Storage Stability
The Si-H groups in hydrosilyl fluorosilicone oil are sensitive to moisture and may undergo hydrolysis or condensation during long-term exposure, leading to reduced activity. Therefore, the product should be stored sealed, dry and protected from light, and kept away from alkaline substances, strong oxidizers and catalyst inhibitors.

Typical Application Scenarios
Crosslinker for Addition-Cure Fluorosilicone Rubber
Hydrosilyl fluorosilicone oil can be used in addition-cure fluorosilicone rubber formulations together with vinyl fluorosilicone polymers or vinyl fluorosilicone oils. Under platinum catalysis, it helps form a crosslinked network and improves oil resistance, surface quality and curing completeness.
Curing Additive for Fluorosilicone Potting Compounds
In fluorosilicone potting compounds, it can serve as an active crosslinking component to improve curing depth, media resistance and electrical protection, suitable for sensors, connectors, wire harnesses and automotive electronics modules requiring oil-resistant potting.
Fluorosilicone Release Agents and Isolation Coatings
It can be used in fluorosilicone release agents, isolation coatings and anti-stick surface treatments to reduce surface adhesion, applicable to molding, coating, tapes, films and composite material processing.
Waterproofing Agents for Fabrics and Leather
Under metal-salt catalysts, hydrosilyl fluorosilicone oil can crosslink at low temperatures to form protective films, providing water, oil and stain resistance for fabrics, leather, paper and other materials.
Surface Protection for Rubber and Inorganic Materials
Suitable for surface waterproofing of rubber products, glass, ceramics, metals, cement, marble and other substrates, improving water resistance, oil resistance and stain resistance.
Oil-Resistant Coatings and Special Additives
It can be used as an oil-resistant coating, anti-stick additive, surface modifier and reactive monomer in fluorosilicone formulations where both oil resistance and reactivity are required.
Selection and Usage Recommendations
-
Select hydrosilyl content by formulation system: for addition-cure fluorosilicone rubber and potting compounds, match the Si-H equivalent to the vinyl content to avoid under-curing or excessively short pot life.
-
Choose viscosity by application method: low viscosity is preferred for potting and impregnation; medium-to-high viscosity may be better for coatings, release agents and surface treatments.
-
Confirm catalyst compatibility: platinum-catalyzed systems should avoid nitrogen-, sulfur-, phosphorus- or tin-containing inhibitors; metal-salt catalyzed film formation should be verified for substrate compatibility and curing temperature.
-
Evaluate media resistance: for fuel, lubricant, hydraulic oil or solvent environments, conduct swelling, aging and adhesion tests.
-
Store sealed and moisture-free: hydrosilyl fluorosilicone oil should be protected from moisture; use promptly after opening and reseal unused portions.
-
Key points for overseas customers: emphasize reactive Si-H groups, oil/solvent resistance, fluorosilicone potting compound crosslinking, addition-cure fluorosilicone rubber compatibility, low-temperature waterproof film formation and release coating applications to support sampling, formulation trials and bulk procurement.
